Freshman Flyers Outmatched by Stepinac

By: Ronan Coyle ’28

Chaminade's freshman Flyers fell to the Stepinac Crusaders by the score of 20-0 at Stepinac's campus in White Plains on Sunday afternoon.

From the start of the game, the Crusaders stifled the Flyers' high-flying offense, clogging the run and forcing a punt on the first series of the game. Punter Quinn Fernandez was able to pin the Crusaders deep in their own territory, but on their first possession, Stepinac drove down the field.

Crusaders running back Jaden Abruzese led the bruising charge, and even though several penalties backed up Stepinac's offense on the drive, it still ended in points, as Abruzese crossed the goal line to open the scoring, 7-0.

The offenses traded possessions until halftime, as Chaminade's red zone defense held strong in the closing minutes of the second quarter to keep the score 7-0 at the break.

Following intermission, Stepinac wasted no time driving down the field again, taking just seven plays for Abruzese to score his second touchdown of the game, making the contest's score 14-0.

Not long after, Stepinac snagged an interception and returned it for a touchdown, extending the lead to 20 for the Crusaders.

From there, a defensive struggle ensued until the final whistle blew, with Stepinac's three touchdowns the game's only scores and the final 20-0.

Following the game, Chaminade head coach Kyle Carroll said the Flyers will focus on "being in position, toughness, and being ready to go" as they prepare for this weekend's game against the undefeated Iona Prep Gaels - a matchup he described as "a very tough task."

Kickoff for Saturday's big game will be at 10:00 a.m. on Ott Field at Gold Star Stadium.
