On Saturday, November 9, Chaminade hosted the CHSAA Freshman Swimming and Diving Championship. The Flyers entered the event as the heavy favorite after their undefeated dual-meet season, and they did not fall short of expectations. With a commanding 336 points, Chaminade won its fifth consecutive championship, scoring over 100 points more than the second-place team, Fordham Prep.
One of the afternoon's highlights was the dominance of the Chaminade's relay teams. The Flyers' 200-yard medley relay team of Mathew McCoyd, Nicholas DeAngelis, Steven Radoslovich, and Nathan Bregman, as well as Chaminade's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Andres Mejia, Brady Gallagher, Will Argenziano, and Christopher Stanislawski, enjoyed impressive victories.
Chaminade also had an impressive showing in the diving portion of the meet. Christopher Varela won the one-meter event with 193 points, and teammate Angelo Giangrande finished close behind in second place.
The star of the meet was Molloy's Serge Layashchenko, who was named MVP for his individual wins in both the 50-yard butterfly and 50-yard breaststroke. Other contenders for this award included Xaverian's Finn Regan (who won the 50-yard freestyle and placed second in the 50-yard backstroke, breaking Xaverian's freshman record in the event), Chaminade's Nicholas DeAngelis (who won the 100-yard individual medley and placed third in the 50-yard breaststroke), and Fordham Prep's Diego Dailey (who won the 50-yard backstroke and placed 3rd in the 50-yard freestyle).
As the varsity season begins this winter, the Flyers look forward to even more contributions from these talented freshmen!
