The JV Flyers kicked off their season with back-to-back road games against St. Mary's and Christ the King on December 3 and 4. Chaminade came out on top in both of these games, defeating St. Mary's, 87-31, before edging out Christ the King, 52-45.Â
The hot start did not come as a surprise to Chaminade's Coach O'Connell, who said that his team had been bringing a lot of energy, intensity, and effort to each of their practices and scrimmages in the weeks leading up to opening night.
This work ethic translated into strong gameplay, as the Flyers were very consistent in these first two showdowns, with scoring distributed widely throughout the roster.
A sense of selflessness has been the key to the Flyers' early success, according to Coach O'Connell: "The guys played together and looked to get their teammates open shots, not just themselves," he explained.
Ιn addition to a strong, consistent effort from their starting five, Liam McNamara has given the Flyers quite a spark off the bench. His tough defense and ability to find his teammates open shots were crucial to the Flyers' strong start to the season.
Chaminade's height has also proven imperative, as the Flyers were able to dominate the glass in both games thus far. This ability to find second chances off offensive rebounds and limit opponents to one shot per possession will be crucial to a successful season.
Overall, Coach O'Connell was very pleased with his team's play in their first two games, but he also sees room for growth. Specifically, he would like to see his team improve their team offense and defense in whatever sets they are in. Still, he is pleased with the start to the season and remains optimistic about the months ahead.
