Flyers Soar to Sixth Straight Win

By: Dennis Harrington '26

After suffering their first loss of the season by a single point on December 14 against Don Bosco Prep, the JV Flyers returned to their winning ways with six consecutive W's over Christmas break - establishing themselves as the team to beat in the conference.

The Flyers kicked off this streak with a 58-47 win at Archbishop Stepinac High School on Friday, December 20. Chaminade got off to a slow start in this game and were down by as many as 10 points in the third quarter. The Flyers were able to turn things around and come back due to a dominant fourth quarter, however. Throughout this game, Chaminade's offense - led by Nicholas Sweeney and Nicholas Collura - showcased its high skill level, netting 10 three-pointers in the victory.

The Flyers then traveled to Holy Cross High School on Saturday, December 21. Chaminade dominated the Knights in an 80-36 victory. Led by their lockdown defense, the Flyers came out strong right from the jump and continued to dominate throughout the entire game. After a dominant first half, the Flyers led by 20. The offense was led by Michael Petrizzo and Liam McNamara, who were able to take control of the offense at the point guard position. They moved the ball well, getting their teammates several open shots.

Chaminade extended their winning streak to three in a tight game against Xaverian High School on Friday, December 27. On the road, the Flyers continued their success by taking down the Clippers, 61-49. Chaminade struggled to shoot well throughout this game; however, Jonathon Walsh and Sweeney were able to dominate the glass and generate many second chances for the Flyers, which was the key to their victory. On the defensive side, Sean Ambrosi's shut-down efforts kept the game close. The tight matchup came down to the fourth quarter, when Jake Ellwood hit a key go-ahead three to seal the win for his Flyers.

The following afternoon, Chaminade returned to the AAC to take on St. Francis Prep. A 12-0 run early in the third quarter put the Flyers in front for good on their way to a 61-49 win. Sweeney, Ellwood, and Collura led the way for Chaminade, who were buoyed by an aggressive defense that was able to create a lot of turnovers - mostly from steals - that led to baskets on the other end.

Two days later, the Flyers traveled to Monsignor Farrell on Monday, December 30. There, they topped the Lions 60-28 for their fifth straight win. Forward Shane Stephen gave Chaminade a huge lift off the bench in this game, using his size to dominate the glass on both sides of the ball.

On Friday, January 3, the Flyers closed out this stretch of games with a road matchup against Kellenberg. Sean Ambrosi and Gavin Burger gave the Flyers critical contributions off the bench, as they created many offensive opportunities and controlled the boards against a tall and athletic Kellenberg squad. The Flyers began to dominate as the game progressed, with guard Andreas Donas increasing the Flyers lead to 20 with a massive three-pointer. From there, the Flyers preserved their lead on their way to a 60-34 victory.

"The bench has been a huge asset to the success we have experienced thus far," said Coach O'Connell, who highlighted the unit's importance in overcoming some of the team's slow starts.

The Flyers look to continue their dominant play into 2025, when the schedule shifts almost exclusively to league play.
