Freshman Flyers Fall in Final

By: Connor Friedman '29

After winning four of its final six matches and clinching home-field advantage for the championship game, this year's JVB edition of the Crimson and Gold fell short to St. Anthony's in the league final, 1-0. Nonetheless, the last few months made it clear that the future is bright for this talented group of young Flyers.

To start the second half of the season, Chaminade battled the Kellenberg Firebirds at St. Paul the Apostle Field in Brookville on October 7. When the two sides first met back on September 9, the Flyers easily soared over the Firebirds, 6-0. This time, the matchup was much closer, but Chaminade's stellar back line remained too difficult for Kellenberg to handle, as the Flyers came out on top, 3-0. The victory represented both Chaminade's fourth win and third shutout in a row.

Following the victory over Kellenberg, the Flyers hit the road four days later to face off against Don Bosco in New Jersey. With the goal of sustaining the win streak firmly in mind, the Crimson and Gold put forth a formidable effort, but it wasn't enough to fight off the Ironmen, who came out on top, 3-2.

The Flyers didn't have to wait long to redeem themselves, however, as they traveled to St. Anthony's High School to face off against the Friars on October 14.  Chaminade came into the game hungry to get back in the win column, and they did exactly that, cruising to a 2-0 road victory. With the win, the Flyers locked up the top seed in the league playoffs.

Goalkeeper Finn McGuigan continued his strong play in net - a position he is only manning thanks to the intuition of head coach William Honan. Earlier this year, McGuigan made the switch from defense to goalie, and he has excelled.

"Goalkeeper is not something he has done for a while," admitted Honan, who also noted McGuigan's determination throughout the season.

Just two days after the victory, the frosh Flyers took to the pitch in Brookville to host a challenging St. Anthony's JVA squad. Despite a strong effort, Chaminade fell, 5-0.

By October 21 - the last match day of the regular season - the Flyers needed to get back on track. Fortunately, they answered the call, kicking their way to a dominant 4-1 win over St. John the Baptist and sealing an undefeated regular-season league record.

Four days later, the playoffs began for Chaminade with a home match against Kellenberg. The freshmen came out buzzing, as Noah Nazaretian finished a beautiful cross from Henry Sullivan to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead inside the match's first three minutes.

In the early stages of the contest, the Flyers controlled all facets of the game. Throughout the first half, they felt like a team on the verge of striking again, and strike again they did, as Aidan Quinn capitalized on a crisp cross off a corner from John Sardelis with six minutes remaining before halftime.

However, Chaminade wasn't done, extending the lead to three with an unbelievable team goal. This time, Sullivan's was the final foot, as he finished into a wide open net just 15 seconds before intermission to stake his Flyers to a three-goal advantage.

While Coach Honan was pleased to see "the boys starting to come together," the game was far from over. The Flyers had many chances in the second half to put the Firebirds away, but they let these chances slip, and Kellenberg continued to hang around.

This failure to capitalize came back to bite Chaminade when Thomas Regazzi was called for a handball in the penalty box, resulting in a PK. Although McGuigan had proven to be very good at saving penalty shots this year, this attempt was perfect, and Chaminade's lead was cut to two with 18 minutes to play.

Suddenly, in the blink of an eye, the Firebirds struck again - this time off a free kick, and just like that, it was a 3-2 game with 15 minutes remaining.

Fortunately for the Flyers, they sidestepped Kellenberg's numerous last-ditch chances and hung on for a 3-2 win.

The only thing now standing between them and the NSCHSAA league title was the St. Anthony's Friars.

The championship game, held on October 28 at Gold Star Stadium, was an even match throughout. Neither team allowed the other many opportunities, so shots were at a premium.

Halfway through the first half, St. Anthony's broke through, as Andrew Serie slotted home a shot off a free kick to make the score 1-0.

Despite this adversity, the Flyers responded well in their efforts to find an equalizer. However, the Friars held them off for the rest of the first half and took a 1-0 lead into the break.

In interviews, Honan has consistently mentioned one word all season - "adversity." His group of freshmen had to battle this enemy in each game this season, and now, they were challenged to conquer it one last time.

The Friars went on lockdown mode for the final 40 minutes. For one pulse-racing moment, it appeared that Chaminade might convert on a cross into the box, but they couldn't get the ball over the goal line.

As the last few seconds melted away, it became clear that the Friars would be awarded the league title for the second season in a row.

Despite falling short, Honan stated that he was "so proud of this group," predicting much success for them next year at the JV level. While this season didn't end the way they wanted, the Flyers certainly put the league on notice that they will be a group of sophomores to be reckoned with next fall.
