Delayed Takeoff: Flyers Grounded by Lions

By: Maximilian Wrotniak '28

With 9:42 left in the fourth quarter, the Lions' Charles Costanzo caught a short pass from quarterback Bryce Moye, spun past Flyers linebacker Giuseppe DeVita, and ran what was left of the 39 yards that separated him from the goal line. The touchdown was the final blow in Monsignor Farrell's 28-3 victory over Chaminade on Saturday, September 19.

The Flyers entered Gold Star Stadium this afternoon hoping to earn their first home victory of the new season, eager for a bounce back after falling to Seton Hall Prep, 30-11, one week prior.

"We came out and played a really good [first] half," said Claro of the tilt against SHP. "Sometimes it's hard to put your finger on exactly what happened…we gave up a big play on special teams, and that was enough."

Coming into this foray with Farrell, Claro emphasized the importance of putting up a strong fight against a fierce opponent, as the Lions were entering the contest ranked as the #2 Catholic football team in New York (according to MaxPreps).

"[We are going to] do whatever we can to beat a very talented Farrell team," promised Claro before kickoff. "I feel like we can run the ball with Trapani."

A talented senior tailback, Anthony Trapani was unavailable for the first games of the season due to injury, and his ability to make explosive plays was missed, as the Flyers went 1-2 to open the campaign.

Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gold, quarterback Sean Carnevale and the rest of the offense struggled to move the ball from the start, as their first drive against Farrell lasted less than two minutes.

After spotting the Lions an early touchdown, Chaminade surrendered a second score with just 0:22 left in the first half. Led by the Moye twins, Bryce and Braxton, Farrell's electric offense made the score 14-0 with the halftime break looming.

Undaunted, the Flyers responded with a touchdown of their own, but the six points were taken off the board due to a penalty on the play. However, this set up junior kicker Kellan Stapleton for a 42-yard field goal, which he made to trim Lions' lead to 14-3 at halftime.

Chaminade continued to struggle to put points on the board throughout the second half, and when Costanzo's score made it a three-score game in the fourth quarter, the Flyers were left with too much to overcome and not enough time to do it.

"Great teams overcome [adversity], but teams that lose games, they let those things fester," said Claro after the game, recognizing that the result of next week's tilt will leave Chaminade's record at either 2-3 or 1-4 at the halfway point of their regular-season schedule.
