Chaminade looked to tame the Lions of Monsignor Farrell in the Flyers' home opener last Friday at Cantiague Park, but the battle lines had been drawn by both teams by the time expired, as the showdown ended in a 2-2 draw.
Both teams were quick and aggressive, with physical play and heavy forechecks featured throughout the affair.Â
Chaminade got the first good chance of the game when a one-timer from Nicholas Juliano rang off the post. Farrell responded to this near-miss, however, taking the lead late in the first period on a bar-down snipe which got past goaltender Chase Martone.Â
The Flyers kept knocking on the door, producing great looks for both Juliano and Brody Murray right in front of the cage. Chaminade, however, entered the first intermission down, 1-0.
The Flyers came out blazing at the start of the second, but due to plenty of turnovers in the offensive zone and a strong Lions defense, the Flyers could not find the twine.
That changed when Timothy Barrins intercepted a pass at the Farrell blue line and slotted one past the Lions netminder to give the Flyers a much-deserved goal, evening the game 1-1 with seven minutes remaining in the second.
However, another Chaminade turnover in the defensive zone allowed the Lions to roar back into the lead, taking a 2-1 advantage into the period.
Chaminade had a golden opportunity to respond on an ensuing power play, but a slew of strong saves from the Farrell goalie kept Chaminade down one score as the game entered its final frame.
Chaminade once again had the better chances on goal in the third, but the Flyers couldn't seem to tame this Lions defense.
As thoughts of a loss in their home opener began to creep into the heads of the Flyer faithful, a loose puck in front found the stick of Steven Katagas, and he put enough mustard on his shot for it to end up in the back of the net, leveling the contest, 2-2.
In a frenzied final five minutes, both goaltenders were lights out, denying great opportunities on both sides before the final horn ended the game in a 2-2 tie.
"We were short-handed tonight, but we battled, and I'm proud of the boys for that," said head coach Keith Macias '89 after the contest. "I would like to see us be grittier and finish our checks more, but overall, I thought our performance was solid.
Chaminade was scheduled to play Wednesday night against the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year, the Xavier Knights. However, that game was postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.Â
The Flyers are now 3-1-1 on the young season. They will next hit the ice Friday night at Cantiague Park; the puck drops against league opponent Stepinac at 7:15 p.m.
