As the postseason approaches, Chaminade's varsity hockey team hopes to finish its regular season strong. They have had some ups and downs over their most recent five-game stretch, posting a 3-2 record in the process.
Their first two games were both against the Xavier Knights at World Ice Arena, located in Flushing Meadows Park. The first showdown took place on January 15, with Xavier missing its captain, Lucas Karagiorgos, as well as other key players. Chaminade took advantage of this undermanned Knights squad, thrashing Xavier, 9-2.
The trend of fast first-period starts continued for Chaminade, as senior Jeremy Zawitosky got the goal party started for the Flyers, burying his shot after two great passes from senior Nicholas Juliano and junior Jack Petrone.
Just a few minutes later, goal-scoring machine Michael Johnson ripped one past the Knights' keeper to extend the Flyers' lead to 2-0. Juliano would add two goals of his own to the tally late in the first, with senior Philip Dobkowski also netting one in between.
Outshooting the Knights 18-10, Chaminade headed into intermission up 5-0.
The second period was more level. Xavier added a goal on a great team play, with Adam Fritz ultimately getting his team on the scoreboard. However, the Flyers would regain their five-goal lead just a few minutes later, as junior Maximus Wood received a perfect pass from senior Sean Rodgers and buried the puck in the back of the net to make it 6-1 heading into the break.
When play continued in the third, the Flyers continued their offensive onslaught. Tristan Lombardo started the period with a goal, followed by another off Zawitosky's stick to make it 8-2.
Juliano completed his hat trick with a late goal to cap off the emphatic 9-2 victory.
Junior Nathaniel Pitman, the starting goaltender for the Flyers, stopped 32 of the 34 shots he faced in the victory.
"A complete game," reflected head coach Keith Macias after the win. "The boys showed out and performed, and I'm pleased with their performance."
Chaminade had a chance to earn back-to-back victories over the Knights when the teams faced off again five days later, but Xavier came ready for revenge, skating to a 4-3 victory.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the first half of the opening period, with both teams garnering chances but failing to convert. That changed when junior defenseman Seamus O'Hara's shot from the point found its way through traffic and ended up in the back of the net to put Chaminade on top, 1-0.
Overall, the Flyers put forth a strong defensive effort in the period, but the Knights stormed back, as Fritz struck again against the Flyers to tie the contest 1-1 after one period of play.Â
The second stanza was all Chaminade, who came out of intermission on fire, piling on chances and continuing to show a strong forecheck. This hard work paid off courtesy of Petrone, who received a great feed from Juliano to convert a one-timer and give Chaminade the lead. In the period's closing minutes, Zawitosky converted a great pass from O'Hara to make it 3-1 heading to the final frame.
The game changed completely in the second half of the third period, as the Flyers surrendered three unanswered goals to cost themselves the contest. The first one came off of a Knights power play, with Nicolas Ferrara burying a one-timer. From there, Xavier would keep up the pressure, and in short order, Charlie Taylor converted a tap-in to tie the game at three.Â
Just a minute later, Ferrara went coast-to-coast for his second goal of the period to give his Knights an improbable 4-3 lead. Xavier dug deep on defense over the final five minutes, and despite getting outshot in the game 30-22, Xavier held on to defeat Chaminade, 4-3.
After this disappointing defeat, Chaminade sprung back into action on January 22 at Cantiague Ice Rink against Kellenberg. The game was broadcast live on Varsity Media, with Chaminade's Roman Brunetti '26 providing play-by-play commentary.
The first period was a struggle for Chaminade, as Kellenberg frustrated the Flyers with their physical play. Chaminade did have the best scoring chance of the period, however, but Lombardo rang the right post, and the contest remained scoreless after one period of play.
Chaminade's Johnson opened the game's scoring in his first shift to begin the second period, intercepting a pass at the Firebirds blue line and ripping a rocket into the top corner to give his Flyers a 1-0 lead. Later, Johnson was crowned the game's most valuable player, earning free pizza for his team in the process.
Juliano propelled his Flyers' momentum just two minutes later, going forehand to backhand and sliding the puck past Firebirds goalie James Rudswick to extend the Flyers' lead two.
Chaminade's relentless defense kept the Firebirds frustrated, creating chaos in the neutral zone. However, the Firebirds eventually capitalized off a loose puck behind the net, as Jake Simeon caught Flyers netminder Nicolas Lamano off guard to cut the deficit in half.Â
Both squads kept knocking on the door, but the second stanza came to a close with Chaminade still ahead, 2-1.
Kellenberg took a penalty to begin the third period, and Chaminade made them pay. With tons of traffic in front, junior Steven Katagas slipped through the Firebirds' defense and tapped one in to restore his Flyers' two-goal lead.Â
Kellenberg would not go away, however, striking back on a laser of a shot off the stick of Michael Parker to make the score 3-2.
But the Flyers stood strong, with senior Brody Murray ensuring this lead would not slip away in the final minutes. His breakaway goal made the score 4-2 with four minutes to play.
Zawitosky tipped a puck from the point on the power play to cap off the 5-2 victory.Â
After enjoying a three-day respite, Chaminade would hit the ice once again in back-to-back games against Fordham Prep and Monsignor Farrell on January 26 and 27.
An early Juliano goal at the Playland Ice Casino put the Flyers ahead just two minutes into the game, but unlike their last matchup - one in which the Flyers thrashed the Rams 9-1 - Fordham Prep would not go quietly in this one.
Just three minutes after the Flyers pulled ahead, a power play goal from Joseph Grogan evened things up for the Rams. At the end of the first period, Chaminade led the shot total 8-6, but the score remained deadlocked, 1-1.
The second period was a near carbon copy of the first. Senior captain John Coletti started the period off with an early tally to put his Flyers ahead, 2-1.
Although it would take a little longer for the Rams to find the equalizer in this period, Michael Nalepka fired one home for Prep to even the score once more.
Parity was again evident on the scoreboard when the buzzer sounded, as the shots were even at 14 apiece and the score deadlocked at two.
Fordham Prep rewrote the game script to begin the third, this time emulating the Flyers with an early goal. It was Grogan again, as he buried his second of the game just four minutes into the third to put the Rams ahead, 3-2.
Chaminade would not back down, however, as Petrone responded just one minute later to tie the game for the Flyers.
The next eight minutes were filled with physical play, and both teams created a number of quality scoring chances.Â
The Rams found the game's clincher when August Kirsten put one past Chaminade's junior netminder Chase Martone with less than two minutes to go. Chaminade pulled Martone and tried to find an equalizer, but nothing materialized, and the Flyers fell, 4-3.
The Crimson and Gold had little time to dwell on the loss, however, and returned to their winning ways just 24 hours later at the Staten Island Skating Pavilion, where they topped Monsignor Farrell, 3-1.
Even though the game was scoreless after the first period, Chaminade outshot Farrell 16-1, a testament to their dominant puck possession.
In the second, Chaminade continued to create scoring chances off strong defensive play in the neutral zone, finally converting late in the period when, on the power play, Coletti found the puck on his tape and buried it in the back of the net to put the Flyers ahead, 1-0.
After Coletti's goal, Chaminade scored again just two minutes later, this time courtesy of Juliano, who made the score 2-0 after two periods.
After being outshot 30-6 through the first two stanzas, Farrell found nine shots on goal in the final frame, netting its first goal of the contest with under three minutes remaining thanks to captain Jack Anzalone, as the Lions had pulled their goalie.
Now leading just 2-1 with two minutes remaining, the Flyers held strong in front of their net, and Coletti added an empty-netter with one second remaining to secure a 3-1 win for the Flyers.
Chaminade is now 10-4-1 overall with three regular-season games remaining on the schedule.
