Tough Enough? Flyers Grapple With The Greats

By: Ryan Manno '27

The Chaminade wrestling team has had a busy and challenging December, facing several tough opponents and competing in multiple noteworthy events.

Although the squad has been dealt some tough losses, the grapplers have showcased impressive individual skills and posted a number of strong results against top-tier competition this month. From a close dual meet at Long Beach to multiple podium finishes at tournaments, the Flyers' resilience and skill are evident as they continue to build momentum for the remainder of the season.

The varsity Flyers visited the Marines in Long Beach for a dual meet on December 4, but Chaminade came up short in a hard-fought battle, losing 37-26. Despite strong individual performances across all weight classes, the wrestlers were unable to overcome Long Beach's formidable talent.

Three days later, the Flyers had a strong showing at the Sayville Fitzgerald Varsity Tournament, finishing fourth out of nine teams. The tournament featured stiff competition, but Chaminade rose to the occasion, with three champions emerging from the event: Louis Kennedy (freshman, 124 lbs.), Finn O' Brien (freshman, 131 lbs.), and Jake Nieto (sophomore, 138 lbs.)

In addition to these champions, Chaminade had a total of nine place-winners out of the 24 wrestlers who competed. The team displayed both grit and skill throughout the tournament, and their performances demonstrated their potential for future success this season.

The Flyers next traveled to New Jersey on December 11 to face off against powerhouse Rumson-Fair Haven in another challenging dual meet. Unfortunately, Chaminade was outmatched, falling 50-20. Although the score might suggest otherwise, the meet was close, as the Flyers fought hard on the mats throughout the afternoon.

Chaminade bounced back with an impressive performance at the Commack Classic Tournament on December 14, where they finished third out of 10 teams. Posting a total of 12 place-winners out of its 24 wrestlers, Chaminade had a strong day overall.

The highlight of the tournament came courtesy of junior Brendon John Katimbang, who emerged as the 145 lbs. champion.  Katimbang's victory was a standout moment, showcasing the junior's skill and determination.

After trimester exams conclude this week, the varsity grapplers look ahead to one of the biggest challenges of the season - the Beast of the East tournament, which will be held in Delaware on December 20-21. This elite competition attracts some of the top high-school wrestlers from across the country.

Competing in this tournament will provide an excellent opportunity for the Flyers to test themselves against the nation's best while gaining valuable experience for later in the season. With several strong performances already, Chaminade is poised to potentially make a statement at this prestigious event.
