The JV hockey team picked up two more wins to kick off December and keep their undefeated record intact. Coupled with a draw against Monsignor Farrell, the Flyers record now stands at 5-0-1 with two games to play before Christmas break.
The squad's first win of the month came via a valuable 4-2 victory over Iona Prep in Brooklyn. Prior to the game, the Flyers head coach, Walter Gilroy, indicated that Iona Prep would be a challenge, and his words proved prophetic.
The Flyers started strong out of the gate, with Emilio Diaz putting Chaminade on the board in the first period to open the scoring. From there, the Flyers captain, Cole Lombardo, took control, scoring once in second and twice more in the third to earn the hat trick and lead his Flyers to a victory over the Gaels.
Two nights later, Chaminade met Monsignor Farrell in a Sunday-night showdown. The Lions, who came into the game with a record of 2-1, came ready to play, opening the scoring at the Abe Stark Sports Center, also located in Brooklyn. However, Lombardo stepped up for the Flyers once again to knot the score 1-1 in the second.
The Lions would score the next two to take a 3-1 lead and put Chaminade's undefeated record at risk. But the Flyers fought back to make the score 3-2 thanks to a tally from forward Giovanni Sferrazza.
Still, Farrell clung to their one-goal lead with less than 10 seconds to play when Chaminade was given a penalty shot - their perfect season hanging in the balance.
The hero for Chaminade was once again their captain, as Lombardo scored on the penalty shot to earn his Flyers a draw.
After the tie, Coach Gilroy reflected on the two games: "I thought we played well in all phases of the game both nights," he stated. "We need to understand that with how successful we have been in the past few years, every team wants to beat us and always brings their 'A' game to play the Flyers."Â
The Crimson and Gold returned to their home ice at Cantiague Park in Hicksville to play the Rams of Fordham Prep on December 13. Prep, who has had an up-and-down start to the season, went into the game with a record of 3-3-1, good enough for third place in the league.
The Flyers captured the lead early when John DiPaolo took a shot which ricocheted off Landon Butler's stick and snuck past the Rams goalie. DiPaolo would finish the game with three assists.
"DiPaolo is a great player," explained Coach Gilroy. "He's one of the leaders of the team, and his grit and determination make him a regular on the scoresheet. Three-point games have become a regular day at the office for John and his linemates."
Five minutes later, Chaminade would score two goals in 25 seconds to pull ahead, 3-0. Another pair of tallies gave the Flyers a comfortable 5-0 cushion at the first intermission.
The Flyers offense continued to shine as they took a 7-1 lead into the third period. With 9:45 left in the game, Luca Petrone, skating towards the goal, passed the puck to Butler. After two pad saves by the Fordham netminder, Butler switched to his backhand to give the Flyers another goal. After an all-around balanced effort, the Flyers ultimately defeated the Rams, 9-1.
"Our defensemen are all very smart and skilled players," reflected Gilroy postgame. "Our breakout and positioning has been excellent all year, and that will always limit the opponent's chances - when they can't sustain any time in our defensive end."
The Flyers next game comes tomorrow afternoon at Iceland against the 2-3 Firebirds of Kellenberg. Puck drops it set for 3:45 p.m. The team will then travel to the Ice Hutch to battle Iona Prep on Sunday.Â
"Iona Prep will be a tough game," admitted Coach Gilroy. "We beat them in a very contested Finals last year, so they know they can play with us, but our boys will be up to the task."
Faceoff on Sunday will be at 8:35 p.m.
