Chaminade's JV hockey team has enjoyed a dominant start to its season, remaining undefeated through its first eight games and proving it can win in a number of different ways. The Flyers have relied on depth, discipline, and a team-first mentality to separate themselves from the rest of the league, outsourcing opponents by a combined total of 54-9 over the first half of their schedule.
Entering the season, head coach Walter Gilroy set clear expectations, emphasizing balance and depth during tryouts. He aimed to build a roster that could maintain high energy and work under pressure, allowing the Flyers to consistently roll through their four lines.Â
"At tryouts, we are looking for a good mix of skill, speed, and physicality," Gilroy said. "We also want a strong balance of freshmen and sophomores."Â
That approach, paired with strong defensive play and reliable goaltending, has been a major factor in the Flyers' early success.
By early January, the Flyers had already played every team in the league and posted an 8-0 record along the way. Puck movement was critical to many of these victories, including a commanding 9-1 home win over Fordham Prep on January 2. However, the Flyers proved they could also win with grit just three days later, posting a 1-0 victory in a matchup against Xavier.
The Flyers' special teams broke through early in the first period. While shorthanded, Chaminade's Matthew Radoslovich netted the game's only goal, finishing on a nice feed from Peter Iocolano. Xavier responded by increasing its physical play and applying offensive pressure, which forced the Flyers to stay determined and focused on structure and discipline.Â
"We have won games mostly because of our skill, but the Xavier game was very physical," Gilroy said. "Our boys showed that if teams want to play that style against us, we can do that, too."Â
Under Gilroy's guidance, the Flyers stayed composed, resulting in victorious puck battles, blocked shots, and limited second chances for the Knights.Â
In goal, Daniel McLoughlin delivered one of the team's strongest performances of the season, stopping all 21 shots he faced to earn the shutout. As the Knights pushed to equalize in the third period, the Flyers' netminder made several key saves to lock down the victory.
Four days later, the Flyers' team-first mentality was once again on full display in a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over Monsignor Farrell, a team whose size and physicality made for a tight contest throughout. Once again, though, Chaminade remained composed and committed to its structure.Â
The Flyers took a quick 1-0 lead when Nickolaos Pirgousis found the back of the net, but Farrell bounced back with a breakaway goal to even the score. Midway through the third period, Pirgousis delivered again, netting a power-play goal that proved to be the difference.Â
"Farrell played us extremely tough," Gilroy reflected. "They are a big and physical team, but our boys were ready to go."Â
Rugged defensive play, disciplined puck management, and top-notch goaltending down the stretch from McLoughlin once again sealed the victory. With the win, the Flyers improved to 8-0 and remain the only undefeated team in the league.
However, as the season progresses, the Flyers are aware that the competition will only stiffen. The aforementioned Xavier Knights as well as Iona Prep are expected to present the strongest challenges down the stretch, but the team's focus remains unchanged.
"I always emphasize that you play for the name on the front of your jersey and not the one on your back," said Gilroy. "This team has absolutely done just that so far, and I anticipate another successful and deep run into the playoffs."
The Crimson and Gold will attempt to continue their undefeated campaign on January 23 at Iceland against Kellenberg. Puck drops at 3:45 p.m.
