Freshman Flyers Top Baptist & Bosco

By: Charles Cozeolino '28

The freshman basketball team is off to an impressive start this season, maintaining their undefeated record with dominant victories over both St. John the Baptist and Don Bosco Prep during a three-day stretch in mid-December. A combination of strong defense, fast-paced offense, and remarkable team chemistry has proven to be nothing short of overwhelming for the Flyers' opponents thus far.

In their fifth game of the season, the freshmen faced off against the St. John the Baptist Cougars in a game that highlighted the Flyers' offensive firepower and lockdown defensive ability. From the opening tip-off in the AAC, Chaminade took control of the contest, quickly establishing a commanding lead at the half, 37-23.

The Flyers' defense suffocated the Cougars, forcing turnovers and leaving St. John's with many pointless possessions. Offensively, Chaminade had no shortage of scoring, as they racked up an impressive 83 points, ultimately cruising to a dominant victory, 83-36.

The game was an impressive display of teamwork, with multiple players stepping up to contribute. Notable names included Lucas Dillon, who had a team-high 23 points. Michael Minniti also shined, tallying 10 points and adding three assists.

Defensively, the Flyers held St. John the Baptist to just 36 points, showcasing Chaminade's relentless pressure and ability to close out on shooters. The Flyers' commitment to both ends of the floor was clear, as the victory pushed their record to 5-0, keeping them atop the early-season standings.

Less than 48 hours later, the Flyers faced one of their toughest challenges yet, as the Don Bosco Prep Ironmen traveled from their campus in New Jersey to face off against the Flyers on December 14.

The Saturday morning matchup proved to be a defensive showdown. Despite having to persist through a lower-scoring affair, Chaminade's resilience and poise allowed them to secure a hard-fought victory, 42-29.

The Flyers' defense continued to impress, stifling Bosco's offense and forcing the Ironmen into tough shot attempts. Chaminade limited Bosco's scoring opportunities, with the Flyers' aggressive rebounding allowing them to control the glass.

With both teams struggling offensively, every point mattered, and the Flyers took advantage when they were able to get the game to slow down. While the offense didn't explode in this contest as it had in previous games, Chaminade's ability to adjust and succeed at a slower pace was impressive.

Chaminade relied on its defense and depth to take over in key moments, with standout performances from several players, including Benjamin Hristoforatos, who had a game-changing eight points and six rebounds.

The freshmen Flyers' ability to dominate on both ends of the court, whether by scoring points or locking down defensively, has established them one of the most well-rounded teams in the league thus far.

As the season progresses, the Flyers will look to continue their unbeaten run as they face even tougher opponents in the coming weeks. But if their recent performances are any indication, this team has the talent and determination to remain an unstoppable force throughout the remainder of the season.
