Frosh Flyers Off to Fast Start

Chaminade's freshmen exploded out of the gate to begin their basketball season, netting two victories by a combined score of 147-58.

In an impressive display of athleticism and teamwork, the frosh opened their season with an 89-18 triumph over St. Mary's on Tuesday in Manhasset.

Chaminade came out of the huddle firing, quickly establishing an early lead that would only grow as the game progressed. Their suffocating defense forced St. Mary's into numerous turnovers and contested shots. By the end of the first quarter, Chaminade had already built a commanding lead, 29-2.

The fast pace of the game was set by the team's quick transition offense, which kept St. Mary's defense on its heels. The freshman team's ability to move the ball efficiently and make high-percentage shots gave them an advantage.

A few standout players made their mark early in the game, putting up impressive numbers and setting the tone for the blowout.

Lucas Dillon, the team's point guard, was sensational in the opening half. Known for his court vision and basketball IQ, he totaled eight points, three rebounds, and two deflections before halftime.

Acacius Fischer was also  a force, grabbing five rebounds in the first half alone. His dominance in the post, combined with his offensive rebounds, allowed Chaminade to control the tempo and dictate the flow of the game.

On the defensive end, the Flyers were a nightmare for St. Mary's. With a combined 11 deflections in the first two quarters, they made it nearly impossible for the Gaels to execute any form of offense.

As the second half began, Chaminade continued to pile on the points. They executed nearly flawlessly on offense, finding open shots and scoring from all areas of the floor. Meanwhile, their suffocating defense remained tenacious, shutting down any semblance of a St. Mary's rally.

Drake Donaldson caught fire in the third quarter, knocking down two 3-pointers. His hot shooting kept St. Mary's scrambling and helped push the lead even higher.

In the second half of the game, Chaminade's depth was on full display, as they maintained the same high level of play, contributing to the team's dominant victory. An impressive performance from Ioannis Fillas was of particular note, as he shot perfectly from the field, finishing with 11 points.

Chaminade's team-oriented approach in which players consistently made the extra pass resulted in several easy layups and open shots. Their unselfish ball movement kept the St. Mary's defense scrambling.

The Chaminade freshman team's ability to execute both offensively and defensively proved to be far too much for St. Mary's, as the final score was 89-18.

This victory over St. Mary's was a statement win for the freshman Flyers, but they knew stiff competition awaited them the next night against Christ the King in Queens.

While the Flyers weren't able to replicate the offensive explosion they enjoyed in their season opener, they still came out victorious. Although competitive later in the game, the Royals ultimately couldn't match the Flyers' defense when it mattered most.

Michael Minniti at the center of it all for Chaminade. His leadership, particularly in the second half, helped the Flyers push their lead and keep Christ the King from mounting a comeback. When asked about his team-leading, 18-point performance, Minniti said, "I'm happy I did well, but I'm glad we got the job done as a team."

While Minniti demonstrated leadership, the Flyers' chemistry was on full display. Lucas Dillon chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds, hitting key baskets when the Royals attempted to make a push. Benjamin Hristoforatos added three deflections and eight rebounds, leading the defense and ensuring that the Flyers remained in control.

The Royals' offense was predictable, and despite some impressive individual efforts from their players, they couldn't get anything going against Chaminade's defense. The Flyers were able to deny their attempts to mount a comeback and forced multiple turnovers.  Christ the King's defense was solid, but it simply wasn't enough to contain Chaminade.

The Flyers' 58-40 victory over Christ the King further solidified their place as one of the most dominant teams in the league. It is becoming clear that Chaminade's ability to adjust and play multiple styles will make them tough competition this season.

The Flyers now turn their attention to St.Dominic's this afternoon; tip-off is at 4:00 in the AAC.
