Freshman Flyers Power Through Homestretch, Now 15-3

By: Charles Cozeolino '28

Chaminade's freshman basketball team continued its season with a mix of commanding wins, a tough loss, and an unexpected cancellation, bringing its record to 15-3. This stretch of games showed the team's resilience and ability to rise to the occasion when it mattered most.

In game 16 of the regular season, the Flyers returned to their home court on January 16 with a mission: assert dominance from the opening tip. Chaminade's stifling defense suffocated Holy Trinity, forcing turnovers and contesting every shot. The result was an impressive offensive display in a 59-37 victory.

Two days later, back at the AAC and in one of the season's biggest challenges, the Flyers fell to Iona Prep, 41-61. The game exposed areas for growth, as Chaminade struggled to handle Iona Prep's full-court pressure and physical play.

There were some good performances however, with players such as Shea Owens and Quinn Fernandez helping the Flyers keep it close.

Next, the Flyers were scheduled to host Mount St. Michael on January 20, but inclement weather led to the game's cancellation.

This afforded them a period of rest before taking to the court the next afternoon for a highly-anticipated game against St. Anthony's. Chaminade came out with unmatched intensity, determined to make a statement, and the resulting 68-38 victory represented what could become a defining moment in the Flyers' season.

Lucas Dillon led all scorers with 18 points, while Drake Donaldson added nine - many of which came when the Flyers began to pull away from the Friars.

Chaminade's defense also shined, holding St. Anthony's to just four points in the first quarter.

The freshman Flyers were visibly elated postgame, celebrating the victory with many of the fans who packed the stands.

The Flyers are heading into the final stretch of their season with significant momentum. They continue to eye the weekend of January 8/9, when a champion will be crowned at Kellenberg Memorial High School.
