On Your Marks! Track & Field Ready to Roll

By: Jack Dunphy '27

After a successful cross country campaign this fall, the Flyers have moved indoors for winter track and field season. Looking to build off last year's success, head coach Kevin Bierne '00 has set the standards high for Chaminade.

"Last year, in both winter and spring track, we had some bright spots, highlighted by our middle-distance events and also our field events," he recalled. "In the distance events, we had a bunch of near-scorers at the varsity level, and many of them were sophomores. We are expecting some big things in track this year, as those athletes are now older and stronger."

The Flyers varsity squad is highlighted by thrower Jonathan Szymanski '26. During a meet in October, Szymanski broke a school record set in 1996, but this new mark does not officially count, as it did not take place during the winter season.

"We are looking for that to get broken officially very early in the season," shared a smiling Coach Beirne. "[Jonathan] is expected to be one of the best throwers in all of New York State. We have a few other throwers looking to support him, too, who have also been working very hard."

Chaminade is also hoping to excel in the distance events this winter. Some of their strongest and fastest runners are hoping to build off the success they enjoyed during this fall's cross country season. The Flyers' "Scoring Five" consists of Brian Guiheen '26, Dan Hilton '26, Sean Loggie '26 , Blake Weaver '27 and Dan Egan '26. Coach Bierne praised this group, but was also quick to note that the Flyers "have strong hurdlers and jumpers, as well."

While Chaminade has a history of success in distance running, this winter, the team is also focused on making up ground in various sprinting events.

"I am looking for this to be a big year for Chaminade sprinters. We have not been strong in these shorter events in a few years, and we have a very strong group of juniors and some very talented seniors who are looking to make some noise in our relays, namely the 4x200 and the 4x400," Beirne admitted. "We've also purchased a bunch of hurdles in the last few weeks to have sprinters and hurdlers completing more dynamic, speed-improving drills regularly at practice."

Finally, Coach Bierne highlighted a very talented senior sprinter - Connor Meehan '25 - as "one of the fastest sprinters we've had in a long time. We are looking for him to bring other guys up to his level at practices and meets."

While Coach Bierne admitted that the Flyers lost many talented seniors from last winter, he is impressed by the depth, strength and camaraderie of this year's team and is optimistic for a successful season.
