Szymanski Sets School Mark

By: Jack Dunphy '27

As the weather grows colder, Chaminade's track and field team is growing hotter.

The Flyers began their winter season with a developmental meet on December 14 against St Anthony's. These meets are designed for the Flyers to enhance their skills and grow faster and stronger in preparation for the more difficult meets later in the season. Simultaneously, Chaminade also competed in CHSAA Relay Carnival at the Armory in New York City.

The highlight of the day came from the varsity 1600-meter relay team - consisting of Nicholas Mauro, Andrew Taylor, Andrew McConaghy and Alexander Figoni - which finished in first place with a time of 3:43.92. Additionally, Jonathan Szymanski threw 55-07.75 in the varsity shot put, also good for a first-place medal. More significantly, however, Szymanski broke the Chaminade record for a junior and qualified for the New Balance Indoor Nationals with his remarkable performance.

The Flyers got into the festive spirit for their next competition, the NSCHSAA Christmas Classic, held at St. Anthony's on December 21. Chaminade produced an excellent all-around performance, with medal winners including Brody Hoffman (third place, freshman 1600m), Rohan Braithwaite (second place, varsity 55m hurdles), Harrison Walley (first place, freshman 600m), Connor Murcott (first place, freshman 600m), Ryan Going (first place, freshman 1000m), Liam Cleere (second place, freshman 1000m) and Connor Meehan (second place, varsity 300m).

In the field events, Szymanski came in first place in the shot put and weight throw with tosses of 56-01 and 59-5.50. Sophomore Antonio Amurao came in third in the freshman shot put. Additionally, Brady Reis and Justin Blaise earned first- and second-place medals in the varsity high jump, while in the varsity long jump, Ethan Jones and Zeshawn McDuffie earned second- and third-place medals. Vincent Bove leaped 15-04.75 to score a first place medal, while in the varsity triple jump, Jones, McDuffie and Braithwaite dominated the podium, finishing first, second, and third.

The next day, the Flyers excelled at the Bishop Loughlin Games, which took place at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. Brian Guiheen took home a sixth-place medal, while Blake Weaver earned ninth place in the varsity two-mile run. Szymanski again stole the show, however, setting Chaminade's school record with a throw of 57-11.50 in the shot put.

On December 28, the Flyers returned to the track at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic, run at the Armory. Szymanski placed third with a shot put score of 58-07.00, while the Flyers relay teams performed exceptionally well, coming in both first and fourth in the 4x200m varsity relay. The underclass squad of Going, Walley, Weaver and Matthew Quinn also found the podium, finishing second in their distance relay.

The Flyers then closed out 2024 strong at the CHSAA Novice Championship, held at Ocean Breeze on December 30. In the novice 600m, Alex Perrone, Masato Clarke, Eamon DiMincio, Christian Taylor, Walley, Kieran McWilliams, Christofer Kofod, Patrick Burns and Lucas Kierez came in fourth, 13th, 14th, 15th, 22nd, 23rd, 25th, 42nd and 47th out of 75 runners. In the 1000m, Eamon Sack, Going and Kenneth Wolf came in 6th, 9th and 15th, respectively. In the varsity 1600m, the Flyers dominated, with Brian Guiheen, Weaver, Sean Loggie, Daniel Hilton and Daniel Egan all finishing in the top 12. In the novice triple jump, McDuffie came in third with an impressive mark of 35-04.75. Finally, in the 4x400m relay, Chaminade came in second on the novice level, while the varsity 4x800 finished third.
