Throughout the month of January, Chaminade's track and field teams have been on a roll.
Early in the month, on January 10, select members of the team traveled to the prestigious Yale Invitational in Connecticut. There, the Crimson and Gold's 4x800 team placed fourth, while the distance medley placed fifth - thus qualifying for the New Balance Nationals in March.Â
The following day, members of the team traveled to St. Anthony's for their third developmental meet, where the Flyers enjoyed an all-around impressive afternoon.Â
Then, on Sunday the 12th, some members of the team travelled to the Stanner Games at the Armory in New York City.Â
"We had several big performances, including a 4:30 mile by Daniel Hilton '26 and a 4:33 mile by Blake Weaver '27," explained head coach Kevin Beirne '00. Beirne went on to highlight the successes of junior thrower Jonathan Szymanski '26, who broke the event's record in the shot put on the way to being named Individual Performer of the Meet.Â
First- and second-year members of the squad headed back to South Huntington for the NSCHAA Freshman/Sophomore Championships on January 18. While Chaminade proved impressive during this meet, they unfortunately fell short of a crown, finishing in second place to St. Anthony's on both levels. Notably, freshman Angelo Giangrande '28 was named NSCHSAA freshman champion in both the high jump and long jump with marks of 5-00.00 and 17-02.00, respectively.Â
The next Sunday, January 26, it was the varsity team's turn to travel to St. Anthony's for their NSCHSAA Championships. Champions from Chaminade included Brian Guiheen in the two-mile, Daniel Egan in the 1000m, Ethan Jones in the triple jump, and Szymanski in both the shot put and weight throw. For his efforts, Szymanski was named meet MVP in the field events.Â
Rounding out the month, the Flyers traveled to the University of Pennsylvania to compete in the inaugural UPENN Winter Showcase on January 31. Facing very steep competition, the distance relay team posted a fourth-place finish.
As of February 5, Szymanski was ranked second in New York State in the shot put, and fourth in the weight throw.
Additionally, the 4x800 relay of Egan, Daniel Hilton, Luke Benanti, and Guiheen will compete against the best the CHSAA has to offer in the Millrose Games on February 8.Â
