3 Wins in 4 Days Bring Bowlers to 10-0

By: Maximilian Wrotniak '28

No one had been able to touch the Flyers.

The 7-0 overall record Chaminade had posted to begin its season was highlighted by the squad's record-breaking 63-0 mark in individual games - meaning no Flyer had tasted defeat on the lanes in more than 11 months.

However, Monday, January 13 brought out-of-state competition to Bowlero Mineola, as the Flyers faced off against Delbarton in the toughest match of the season thus far.

The New Jersey powerhouse stepped on the lanes ready to showcase their skills. Likewise, the Flyers were excited for their first - and only - interstate matchup of the year.

Despite a quick opening from Delbarton that saw Chaminade give up their first frames of the season, the Flyers would soon turn the tables.

Impressive games two and three led the Flyers to a 7-2 victory, improving their record to 8-0 on the season. The triumph was spurred by exceptional performances from a number of individual keglers.

"The key to victory has been teamwork, strategic adjustments, and standout individual performances," reflected head coach Gregory Gerner.

One such standout performance came from team captain Alexander Fiorillo, who bowled a 639 series.

Overall team depth played a crucial role in the victory as well, with sophomore Damian Torres and senior Christopher Erb contributing crucial performances.

The Flyers' strength, stamina, and resilience would be put to the test in the aftermath of this triumph, however, as two more matches were scheduled over the next three days.

Just 24 hours after the win over Delbarton, the keglers faced off against the Cougars of St. John the Baptist at Bowlero Mineola. Earlier in the season, the Flyers overwhelmed the Cougars 9-0, a score which they were able to replicate in the rematch.

Fiorillo again led the Flyers, posting a season-high 689 series to help his team to the sweep.

Two days later, on Thursday, January 16, the bowlers headed to South Levittown Lanes for a showdown with the Titans of Holy Trinity.

Like the Cougars, the Titans had been defeated by the Flyers in a 9-0 shutout earlier in the season, and, once again, Chaminade was able to post a perfect performance.

The Flyers glided to another 9-0 victory, bringing their regular-season record to 10-0 with a net score difference of 88-2.

While there were certainly many keys to this victory, Coach Gerner highlighted the contributions of a pair of seniors:

"Kieran Hickis has also been consistent, contributing with a 601 series and high games over 200," praised Gerner. "Consistency and high scores from leaders like Alex Fiorillo…have been crucial in maintaining momentum and achieving success."

Four matches - two against St. Anthony's - remain on the Flyers' regular-season schedule before the league championships take place on February 5 and 6 at Wantagh Lanes.
