A new year, a new team, a new destiny.
Chaminade's 2025 varsity lacrosse team is set for greatness. The squad, ranked eighth in the country according to Inside Lacrosse, oozes talent and confidence.Â
"I am extremely confident that every time we step on the field against any opponent this season, we are giving our full, very best effort into every play," said Gavin Lynch '25. "When this team does that, I don't think anyone in the country can beat us. This is definitely one of the most well-rounded and talented teams I've played with."
"Our team has been blessed with exceptional talent. This team has the potential," stated head coach Jack Moran, who is entering his 45th year at the helm. "Our outlooks for the season are high."
The squad runs through its most talented player, William Ball '25, who has dominated the faceoff X since his freshman year. (He remains the only player in Chaminade history to play on the varsity level as a freshman.) Now in his fourth season, Ball was bestowed the honor to wear number 19 in rememberance Gold Star alumnus Sgt. James J. Regan '98.
"Ball is, in my opinion, the best high-school faceoff man in the country. He won 79 percent of his faceoffs last year," praised Coach Moran. "He was voted by his teammates the honor of wearing number 19 for a reason."
"It's beyond an honor to represent Sgt. James J. Regan and the Regan family," said Ball. "We play for Jimmy and all the Flyer graduates who have lost their lives serving our country. As Coach Stephen Leghart says, 'Chaminade is family.'"
While Ball headlines the roster, he isn't the only star. The offensive attack is highlighted by the trio of Connor Kuttin '25, James Gillis '26, and John Balsamo '26, who combined for 75 goals last season. Kuttin provides incredible playmaking skills at X, while Gillis, the National Lacrosse Federation's second-ranked player in the class of 2026, joins with Balsamo to give the Flyers incredible scoring on the wings. Accompanied by midfielders Sean Connolly '25 and Lynch, the Flyers' offense is set to shine.
"I expect the offense to be very balanced this year. We have a talented core group of guys from last season and a bunch of younger guys ready to take on bigger roles," said Kuttin. "The chemistry between Gillis, Balsamo, Lynch, Connolly, and myself will take us very far this year. I have no doubt that we will be able to produce at a high level."
On the defensive side, the Crimson and Gold return many talented poles, including Louis D'Agostino '25, Gavin Fitzpatrick '25, Gavin Duran '26, and Peter Gerbasi '25, all of whom will anchor the defensive unit in the absence of now-graduated Benjamin Fox, who was a captain of last year's team.Â
In the cage, Chaminade has one of the best tandems in the country, with both Kieran Walsh '26 and John Durnan '25 set to spend time between the pipes. Walsh, an Inside Lacrosse four-star prospect, and Durnan are slated to split time in the net during the Flyers' season-opening contest against the sixth-ranked team in the country (according to Inside Lacrosse), McDonaugh (MD).Â
"I think that our goalie tandem is one of the best out there," said Durnan. "I couldn't be more excited to see what noise we make this year."
"Durnan and I have a special connection in which we support each other no matter what. We have each other's backs and help each other as much as possible to make the next possible save," added Walsh. "Our connection as goalies is not something you will ever see between any other competing goalies in the country. We help each other as much as we can."
The Crismon and Gold will begin the season this weekend on a two-game road trip to Maryland, facing the aforementioned McDonaugh today and Loyola-Blakefield on Sunday. The Flyers have a light month of March with only three matchups on the schedule, but April presents a gauntlet of incredible competition.
On April 5, Chaminade will travel to Delaware to face Inside Lacrosse's #14 Salesianum, who beat the Flyers 10-9 last year on Ott Field. A week later, the Crimson and Gold take a trip to the University of Notre Dame to match up with St. Ignatius, Inside Lacrosse's #25 team in the country, and Loyola-Maryland. Later in the month, the Flyers will take on three of Connecticut's top teams in Darien, Wilton, and Fairfield Prep (Inside Lacrosse's #19 team). Finally, on April 24 in South Huntington, Chaminade will take the field against their biggest rival, St. Anthony's - the #3 ranked team, according to Inside Lacrosse.Â
In May, the Flyers will cap off the regular season with contests against Delbarton on May 3 and Mahnasset on May 10. The matchup with Manhasset represents this year's "Reg's Rock" game honoring Sgt. Regan, who was from the town.
In the postseason, Chaminade will face off against St. Anthony's on May 15 in a battle for the NSCHSAA championship. Just like every other year, this matchup is the one circled on everyone's calendar.
"It means everything to us," said Gillis. "Obviously, it's the biggest game of the year, and it motivates us every day at practice."
The Crimson and Gold haven't defeated the Friars since 2019, but Chaminade hopes to use its abundance of talent to stop the streak this season.
"This is the most dedicated group I have been with at Chaminade," said D'Agostino. "We plan on playing a fast, physical, and competitive game. We're looking to dominate."
"We have strong belief and confidence in our team," added Kuttin. "When we are playing as a team and having fun, I truly believe that there is no team that can stop us."
