Flyers Ride 13-Game Win Streak into Championship Showdown

By: Thomas Gamba '26

Three more games brought three more wins for the Chaminade Flyers.

Over the past week, the Crimson and Gold defeated Delbarton (NJ), Iona Prep, and Manhasset to bring their record to 14-1 ahead of the NSCHSAA championship game against St. Anthony's on Thursday.

"All three teams were great opponents, and they gave us different challenges. I'm glad that we were able to come out on top in all three contests," said Connor Kuttin '25.

The superstar trio of James Gillis '26, Gavin Lynch '25, and John Balsamo '26 combined for 31 goals and 45 points over the three contests, spearheading the Flyers' attack.

"Gillis, Lynch, and Balsamo all understand our offensive sets and know where all their teammates will be when they have the ball and when they are off the ball," said head coach Jack Moran. "All three of them are outstanding shooters and feeders."

"We focus on the task at hand, which is attacking practice everyday," said Balsamo. "With that, we prepare for our next game and go out and dominate."

Chaminade hosted Delbarton, which was previously Inside Lacrosse's #5 ranked team in the country, on May 3 at Gold Star Stadium. As expected, it was a tight battle between two of the top teams in the country.

In the first quarter, the Green Wave showed their ability to respond, combating every goal from the Flyers with a tally of their own. Through their tenacious ability to win ground balls in the midfield, Delbarton was able to counterattack Chaminde's stellar offense. The Green Wave capped the quarter with a goal by FOGO Kane Quenault 50 seconds before the period's end to knot the score at three as the first quarter concluded.

The Crimson and Gold's attack then dominated the start of the second quarter. Within the first 4:17, the Flyers put three goals past Delbarton's netminder Tanner Shimko, an Inside Lacrosse three-star prospect. Gillis already had a hat trick in the game, and Chaminade's defense was starting to shut down the Green Wave offense.

For the next seven minutes, it became a defensive fight, as both teams mustered only a goal apiece, but once again, late-quarter heroics by Delbarton cut into Chaminade's advantage. With 12 seconds remaining in the period, Chase Houser rounded the net and tossed a backhand through the wickets of Kieran Walsh '26 to bring the Green Wave within two. The first half ended with Chaminade in front, 7-5.

Delbarton threw the first punch of the second half when Houser buried his second goal of the game, but Chaminade answered, erupting for three straight goals in the ensuing seven minutes to extend their advantage to four. The spurt was finished off by an electric transition goal from Gillis off of an assist from William Ball '25.

Despite the four-goal deficit, the Green Wave didn't give up. For the third straight quarter, they came up clutch in crunch time. With 1:11 showing on the clock, Jack Sheridan rolled inside and lasered one to the back to the net, and then, 17 seconds later, Christian Troczynski scooped up a ground ball and fired another one past Walsh to make the score 10-8 going into the final frame.

The fourth quarter was dominated by Chaminade. Led by Walsh in the cage, the Flyers showcased shutdown defense over the game's final 12 minutes. The Green Wave had their opportunities, but Walsh was a brick wall in net, which allowed Chaminade to control possession. Then, the Crimson and Gold put the ball in the stick of their closer, Gillis, who did what he does best - score goals - to seal the deal for the Flyers.

Doing his work from both wings, Gillis was able to dodge his way into open space, allowing him to rip two shots into the back of the net, giving him six goals on the day and clinching Chaminade's 13-9 victory.

Gillis, Lynch, and Balsamo combined for all 13 goals, and Walsh made 16 saves.

"Delbarton was a tough opponent, but focusing throughout the week in practice helped us to execute on game day," said Gillis. "When you have a team like ours, where all the guys love each other so much, you win big games like these because you play for your brother next to you."

The Flyers' second game in this three-game slate came against Iona Prep in New Rochelle on May 6. The Crimson and Gold were on the ropes early, as Timmy Plunkett, Inside Lacrosse's #18 ranked player in the class of 2026, and Billy Haggerty, an Inside Lacrosse four-star prospect, each netted a goal to put the Gaels up 2-1 early in the first. However, the Flyers would get their offense going thereafter, tallying three straight goals over the next two minutes.

To end the first frame, Balsamo found his groove on the attack, as he ripped two goals in the final half of the period to extend Chaminade's lead to four, 7-3, at the conclusion of the first quarter.

The second frame showcased much of the same from the Crimson and Gold, as they dominated on both ends of the field. The offense was once again highlighted by Lynch and Balsamo, who each netted hat tricks before the second quarter ended with Chaminade leading, 11-4.

The Flyers never looked back in the second half as they put away the Gaels, winning 14-5. Balsamo led all scorers with six points.

To end the week, Chaminade took on Manhasset High School in the annual "Reg's Rock" game in honor of Sgt. James J. Regan, a former Chaminade lacrosse player from Manhasset. Regan, who lost his life while serving our country, wore number 19 while playing for the Flyers, so every season, a Chaminade lacrosse player is bestowed the jersey in honor of Regan.

"Representing Jimmy is the greatest honor," said Ball, who dons #19 for the team this year. "Every time that we put on our Chaminade helmet, we play for Jimmy and every other Gold Star alumnus."

With hundreds of fans in attendance at Gold Star Stadium, the teams faced off on May 10 to honor Regan. Just like the previous two games, Lynch tallied the first two goals for the Flyers, and once again, the scoring wouldn't stop there, as Balsamo (a Manhasset native) and Gillis each netted a goal apiece to give the Crimson and Gold a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Flyers put on a show for the rest of the matchup, adding 11 more goals from a variety of players. The clock hit triple zeroes in the fourth quarter with Chaminade taking home the victory, 15-4.

Lynch and Balsamo led the charge with four goals each.

"I thought we made good adjustments and clicked well in the second half," said a reflective Lynch. "We played well in the matchup."

The Crimson and Gold now start preparation for their biggest game of the year,  the NSCHSAA championship game vs. St. Anthony's at Hofstra University.

After defeating the Friars (Inside Lacrosse's #11 team in the country) for the first time in four years back on April 24, the Flyers (Inside Lacrosse's #5 team) are looking to do it again, but this time, they also hope to bring the championship trophy back to Mineola for the first time since 2018.

"Our team is mentally and physically ready for a very tough opponent," said Coach Moran. "Winning an NSCHSAA championship is the goal that we have been preparing for all year. We just need to play at our highest level, as we have done for most of the year."
