Flyers Extend Win Streak to Seven

By: Thomas Gamba '26

The Chaminade Flyers are firing on all cylinders.

After returning from South Bend, the 8-1 Crimson and Gold picked up three more wins against Fordham Prep, Darien (CT), and Wilton (CT) in dominating fashion. In the victories, the Flyers put up at least 16 goals in each contest, besting opponents by a net score of 50-17.

"We played well over this stretch of games," said head coach Jack Moran. "We had limited time between games, but we were at our best against very good opponents."

"We really came together as a team and rallied as a unit against tough competition," added Gavin Lynch '25, who tallied 20 points over the three contests. "We imposed our will and did what was needed to win each game."

Chaminade  hosted Fordham Prep on Wednesday, April 16 to start the three-game slate. Defending their home turf, the Flyers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first 52 seconds of the game. The scoring didn't stop in the first quarter, as the Crimson and Gold would net nine more goals, including one from John Balsamo '26 with under one second to go in the period.

The Flyers added three more tallies in the second quarter, which gave them a 14-1 edge after the first half. For the rest of the game, Chaminade rotated in a number of players. During the matchup, four different goalies spent time between the pipes for the Flyers, and Caleb DaRocha '25 scored his first two goals of the season.

The Crimson and Gold scored two more goals in the second half, ultimately defeating Fordham Prep, 16-1. The quartet of James Gillis '26, Connor Kuttin '25, Lynch and Balsamo combined for 15 points in the matchup.

"It was a total team effort in this game," said Kuttin. "It was great to see our entire team contribute and get their chances. Building a big lead, it was also great to see the players who work so hard in practice get a chance in a game."

Next, the Flyers took a trip to Darien, Connecticut to face the Blue Wave on Saturday, April 19. Once again, Chaminade came out of the gates blazing. Sean Connolly '25 started the scoring with two goals within the first 2:07. In the ensuing minute, the Flyers continued to throw shots on net, doubling their advantage and forcing a quick Darien timeout.

The Crimson and Gold continued to tack on to their lead in the first frame - with 3:32 to go in the period, the Flyers' edge ballooned to seven. Behind a hat trick from Lynch and a perfect showing from William Ball '25 at the faceoff X, Chaminade held a 9-2 advantage after the first quarter.

Despite the large deficit, Darien wouldn't go down without a fight. The Blue Wave clawed back in the second quarter to decrease the margin to 10-5 at halftime. Darien's second-period effort was led by goalie George Persinger, who made multiple tough saves to keep the Blue Wave within striking distance.

In the third quarter, defense dominated the game, as both squads only notched one goal apiece. Kieran Walsh '26 and Persinger both stood tall in their cages, allowing for limited offensive production. Maintaining a five-goal edge, the Flyers looked to close things out in the final frame.

The Blue Wave struck first in the fourth quarter, as Wes Scallen finished off a pass from Max McBride 49 seconds into the period. Just over three minutes later, Darien doubled their total in the frame after Connor McNamara buried his second tally of the contest to cut the Flyers' advantage to three.

With Darien on their tails, the Flyers looked to their leaders to step up. Over the next five minutes, Kuttin, Lynch, Balsamo, and William Pizzo '27 combined for five goals, cresting the Blue Wave in a 16-10 victory. Lynch led the way with five goals and two assists.

"We came out hot and moved the ball well," reflected Balsamo. "Ball's domination at the faceoff dot allowed us to take good shots on the other end. We threw the first punch and continued throughout each quarter."

Three days later, the Flyers took on another Connecticut powerhouse, the Wilton Warriors. This contest was highlighted by another dominating performance from Ball at the faceoff X, as he went a perfect 22-for-22 from the dot.

The Flyers jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter, but the Warriors battled back by putting up four goals in the second period, as Chaminade led 6-4 at the break.

The Crimson and Gold then exploded for 12 goals in the second half, putting away the game and taking home their seventh straight win.

Lynch had a season-high 10 points, while Christian Atwell '26, William Ferraro-Reich '26, and Samuel Fox '27 all scored their first goals of the season.

"Our offensive adjustments at halftime got us going and allowed us to get the win," said Connolly. "Ball going 100 percent at the X never hurts, and the defense held it down."

With three more wins in their pocket, the Flyers are now laser-focused on St. Anthony's, whom they will face on April 24. Chaminade looks to take down its top NSCHSAA opponent for the first time in four years.

"Our mentality is simple - compete, dominate, play together, and simply play Chaminade lacrosse," said Ball.

"Our whole season has been predicted on this game, and we want it so much," said Gillis. "All of our hard work and determination throughout the offseason and during this season has allowed us to feel confident going into Thursday's clash. It is our time to win this game."

Another chapter of this great Long Island rivalry will be written at 4:00 p.m. on April 24 at Cy Donnelly Field in South Huntington.
